The Google Home app gains an obvious feature that changes everything

A seemingly subtle update has quietly transformed the Google Home app into a significantly more powerful smart home hub. The latest change—integration of temperature scheduling directly into Google Home for older Nest Thermostats—may just be the most impactful upgrade yet.

For owners of the 3rd-generation Nest Learning Thermostat and the Nest Thermostat E, Google has unveiled a long-awaited feature: the ability to set temperature schedules right from the Google Home app. No longer must users rely on the standalone Nest app for this essential functionality. Even existing schedules created there now seamlessly appear within the Google Home interface.

Beyond schedule management, the update strengthens the Home app’s utility by bringing sensor data for the Learning Thermostat into view. Plus, it sports a refreshed, more intuitive user interface—featuring brighter visuals, clearer heating and cooling labels, and a redesigned energy dashboard offering richer stats and yearly energy comparisons.

This feature is part of Google’s broader strategy to consolidate control over smart home functionality within one app. Past updates have introduced more automation options, smart camera control, and better media features through Google Home—yet the Nest Thermostat schedule integration had been a glaring omission until now.
